I started college in September of 2001. At the time, I had absolutely no aspiration to be an artist. I thought that I was in school for two reasons; to get a business degree, and to make some kinds of impact on the institutions cross country and track programs. Fast forward three semesters. The school I was attending did not offer an art degree, but they did offer one art class . . . for therapeutic reasons or something, I don't know. Frustrated with my lack of enthusiasm for other subjects, I decided to enroll in this art class during my fourth semester. It took about two weeks of class before I realized that even if i wasn't very good at art . . . it was something that would hold my attention, where other classes/subjects/majors had not. I transfered to a school that had a bachelors in fine art and started working towards both a degree in graphic design and in fine art painting/printmaking. Fast forward some more. I have since graduated, and am not entirely sure what the next step in my own creative process is supposed to be. I live in a basement. I create art for friends, my band, and on very rare occasions, for small art exhibitions. This will serve as the current, updated account of what I am making from day to day. My name is Matthew Apol, and this is my sketchbook . . . these are the marks I make.
